COVERS BY THE BAND HOLE

Courtney Love is kind of a crazy bitch. I don't even know what she does anymore - I don't really think she is much of a musician these days, more so historical/cultural celebrity that goes to parties and gossips to the media. She randomly pops up here and there with "Courtney Love" collections of babydoll dresses, making angsty teen girl drawings for art shows along with friend David LaChapelle's portraits of her, and online media talking about how Marlon Brando might have been her grandpa.
Or the depressing tales of her estrangement from Francis Bean, her daughter with Kurt Cobain.

I've written about some of the influences via film and fashion of the "kinderwhore" persona that Courtney Love was so fond of in the early '90s. Musically, she seemed influenced by a variety of sounds. They were definitely easy to label "grunge", but Courtney loved pop music of the past, hung around the New Wave scene as a groupie for a while in the '80s, and living in California was around the legacy of LA punk. For a while though Hole was rad as fuck. Their first two records, Pretty on the Inside (produced by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon) and Live Through This, were great... then after Kurt died, Hole got a bit glossy and lost a lot of their charm. One thing about that era was that Hole produced a bunch of great covers, mostly of late '80s indie proto-grunge bands and '70s acousto pop hits. Some of these covers are way better than others, but many are bad ass renditions are other people's songs.

 1. WIPERS "over the edge"

 2. YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS "credit in the straight world"

 3. RAINCOATS "the void"

 4. BEAT HAPPENING "hot chocolate boy"/GERMS "forming"

Two for the price of one! Germs being old school punk from LA, home of Hole, seems appropriate.

5. FLEETWOOD MAC "gold dust woman"
Courtney Love seems incredibly influenced by Stevie Nicks, both in her singing style and some of her fashion.

 6. NEIL YOUNG "cinnamon girl"

 7. VELVET UNDERGROUND "pale blue eyes"

 8. THE CRYSTALS "he hit me (& it felt like a kiss)"

 9. ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN "do it clean"

 10. JONI MITCHELL "both sides now"
Hole's version is under the name "Clouds"

11. DONOVAN "season of the witch"

 12. REPLACEMENTS "unsatisfied"

 13. JOY DIVISION "she's lost control"
